Greater Baton
Rouge Children's Chorus presents Songs of Survival Saturday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. LSU School of Music Recital Hall Greater Baton Rouge Children's Chorus will perform "Songs of Survival," Saturday, February 6, 7:30 p.m. in the LSU School of Music Recital Hall. Under the direction of Jennifer Ellis, the ensemble will showcase repertoire that has arisen from adversity and which underscores the role singing plays in the human experience. Songs arising from slavery, World Wars I and II, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and fight for freedom in South Africa will be woven around inspirational readings. The readings will be taken from children's reflections on and responses to these trying human events. The concert includes familiar spirituals, music by Charles Ives, the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," and an arrangement of "White Cliffs of Dover" by local pianist and educator Dr. Henry Jones. Anchoring the concert will be a performance of the "Largo" from Dvorak's Ninth Symphony as transcribed and sung by women in a Japanese POW camp on Sumatra and featured in the film Paradise Road. Yannah Gustafson accompanies GBRCC, and Bethany Ring is assistant conductor. GBRCC is comprised of auditioned children in grades 4-10 representing public, private, and home schools in the area, and is known for its highly eclectic programming and collaboration with local artists and composers. GBRCC has performed with Baton Rouge Symphony, Baton Rouge Ballet Theater, Baton Rouge Little Theater, and Louisiana Sinfonietta, and most recently with Opera Louisiane. The concert is free, but donations will be welcome pre and post concert.
GBRCC is a community chorus for children in grades four through ten striving to cultivate their sense of discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and self-confidence through great choral music. Open Auditions are held each year Director: Jennifer Ellis
